Talking About Poker Tournaments

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

Here are a few basics of what poker tournaments has to offer up to any individual who wants to know more about it.

Poker tournaments are amazing. Watching a high stakes poker tournament is one of the most thrilling things, if you ask me. I have seen people who aren’t even interested in Texas hold ‘em watch the World Series of Poker with rapt attention. It starts with the high stakes involved, of course, but it goes much deeper than that. It is the tension, the suspense, the slow pace of the game and the fact that everything rides on the last card. That is the thrill of a tournament of poker.

Of course, most of us can never make it to that level. We can never be poker champions. You can try reading poker books, consulting poker strategy guides, cheating at poker, and anything else, and you will still probably never be among the best. Only a few people can do that. That doesn’t mean that you are not good, and that doesn’t mean that you can’t play a good game of poker at home with your friends. Organizing your own poker tournaments is one of the best ways to spend time with the people you like, having a fun and adventurous game.

We have had a lot of fun during the first portion of this article and hopefully you feel as though you have a firm grasp on the topic.

One of my friends, in fact, has worked as a professional poker party planner, and she has told me quite a bit about it. She is always talking about the poker tournaments that she holds. A lot of states allow private poker parties, provided that they stakes stay below a certain limit. Some people like to just stay at home with a few friends. Usually, I like to get some chips, some beers, some good music, and invite the boys over for a night of nickel, dime, quarter. Other people, however, like a higher level of poker tournaments. For them, it is a much about pretending that they are playing in the big leagues as it is about the game itself. By setting up a poker tournament, they can make everything feel important. That makes even a low stakes game much more exciting.

Of course, if you want to hold real poker tournaments, you need a little bit more space and a few more people than for just a poker night. Usually, a home poker night involves four or more players. A poker tournament, by contrast, requires a least a few tables worth of people. I figure that 12 players is the minimum if you want to have a really competitive elimination event. Anything less, and it is just another poker night with the boys.

What you have learned while reading this informative article about poker tournaments, is knowledge that you can keep with you for a lifetime.

Vegas And Video Poker Strategy

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

I love going to Las Vegas. It is so different from day to day life that even if I am there only for a long weekend I feel like I have had a break. Watching people is amazing. It was through watching others gamble thought I started thinking about how wagering started. It is very obvious that it is a very strong part of eastern cultures. There are many games as well as slot machines that are based on eastern themes.

When I go to Vegas I do not go to win money. I know that the odds are with the house. I do like to play video poker because I have read that the odds of winning are better than other slot machines. I have read some video poker strategy and some of it makes sense. There are so many different poker machines to choose from. You have to know the differences between full-pay and short-pay machines, you’ll have to know the optimum strategy for each type of video poker machines. Now with the majority of machines in Vegas you can switch over which denomination you want to play right on the machine, also many of the machines give a choice of which poker game you want to play such as jokers wild, deuces wild multiple hands etc. My video poker strategy is to check the pay tables. I want to play machines that are going to return my bet for three of a kind or two pairs. Also you will find that the games that include a wild card, such as jokers wild and deuces wild, the pay backs are less. You want to sit at a machine that pays a minimum of a thousand credits for a royal flush.

The royal flush is the ultimate hand and prize when playing poker. My video poker strategy, unlike many others is not to go for the royal flush at every opportunity. I used to do this when I first started playing video poker and found that I was losing many hands by doing this. Some people will say if you have for example two kings, and an ace that matches one of the kings you should hold that instead of the pair. I have found that by holding the pair I have a great chance of getting three or four of a kind, a much better chance than getting a Royal Flush. My best video poker strategy is to cash out of a machine any time I have doubled my money.
